I have a "nice" face?
I do???
And that's why?
Why perfect strangers would approach, me, who was perfectly minding my own business to ask me random questions & chat me up? It's not that I think that small talk is taboo, just that it's usually the weirdest of conversations, or shall I say interactions, because usually I'd be too flabbergasted to properly react. Imagine this...
(1) An auntie who was cleaning up the NUS common area while I was doing my reading at a nearby study table waiting for an early morning lecture made small talk which ended with her passing me her home number so that I could encourage her daughter to study hard and end up in uni too.
I was debating it for a while, but finally did not. It was just too weird. But I still have the number somewhere and I remembered the daughter was named Nora.
(2) A Sultanah Aminah Hospital visitor who seeing I was so visibly upset and crying my heart out, and understandably, after witnessing my cousin just coughed out a whole bowl of blood, when apparently there wasn't any doctors around because it was a weekend, started to ask if I was his daughter, where I was studying, what happened to my "Dad" and a whole series of inane questions.
I didn't clarify or answer anything, in fact stopped listening after maybe the first 3 questions.
(3) Some band-guy who suddenly jumped in the cable car with me & K when there were obviously so many empty cars around, and proceeded to make conversation on the long, long ascent up a mountain and invited us to come listen to the band and have lunch or drinks or something. / On the same trip we also our parasailing guides offered to buy us dinner despite us telling us we were with our whole bbbiiiiiiiiigggg family.
We did go to where the band was, but only because it was the only place we could get refreshments. Then hurriedly scuttled away when the saw the said guy apparently spotting us and heading in our direction.
(4) Some pharmacy cashier asked bleary-eyed me who was running a very high fever & coughing my lungs out if I was from HSS. I peered at her with no recollection. But she proceeded to refresh my memory that I was D's friend,D being a member of my clique whom I least hung out with, and the least likely person I'd imagine anyone to associate with me, then rattled off the names of all the guys in my clique. I tried reading her nametag with no reconciliation with a person who was supposed to be my junior. But she ended the conversation with a request for me to relay her regards to D, and the rest of the guys, which she hopefully enquired whether I still met up with (short of asking could she join the next time we met).
Was rather creepy at that time, but after I got well, I was pretty amused by it. Obviously someone who had a crush on the soccer guys, which covered most of the guys in the clique. At that time, the gang was still pretty faithful in meeting up, so I did relay her regards to D especially. Unfortunately he had no recollection of her either.
(5) An OG salesguy who came up to me to enquire where I had bought my handbag, how much it was, whether I knew if it was still on sale. I must have looked pretty shocked, as he proceeded to explain he was asking on behalf of his female colleague. Actually I was shocked because the way he asked the question sounded as if he needed to check my shopping bags for security reasons. Twice. Then on the third time, the female colleague personally came up to me the same series of questions.
I got the bag on a bargain from some atrium sale actually. But it happened that weeks after the incident, both Sis & I spotted the same kind of bag at several shopping centres. We were musing whether we should drop by OG to tell the girl.
If it was just my face, dear K, as your theory goes. Why have I also been picked up over the phone, the work phone, no less. I've also had various other messages I wasn't sure from whom.
C'mon, you all know me long and well. Did you feel the extreme need to talk to me & ask me a question when we first met? (Though throughout knowing you, I do recall moments of being a walking dictionary/encyclopedia/street-directory/transit guide/price guide.....)
HEY! you people ask me weird things too! All in all, my defense is:
