Was reading the forum letter on depriving a child of the pride of receiving an award just because the child was lucky enough to have a household income of above $3K.

Have heard various forms of the same issue.

I applaud meritocracy, but sometimes think nowadays "awards" can be too overrated.

Some may say it's because I've already had that cupboard-full of plaques or the files of certificates.

I remembered a certain point when I expected to get a top award but didn't and was feeling rather disappointed. But darn if I'd admit it and even darner to go crying to Mummy and Daddy and then them trotting off to the higher authorities about the psychological trauma or what-nots thus inflicted on me.

*rolls eyes*

To me, it was a reality check that I was getting complacent and not working as hard as I should to achieve that certain standard.

If you're really good, at some point or another, your good work will get recognised. That being said, you don't need constant pats on your back to say you're good.

If that child was really good, even though he/she doesn't qualify for the Edusave Merit bursary, then he/she should have gotten the Edusave Scholarship.

A merit bursary is not a normal bursary award? Auntie, ah any bursary is for students with financial constraints. The merit part actually refers to pupils in the situation who do well in their studies.

If the parents really need to reward the child, please do so, since you have that above-$3K household income.

You'd think that that is the typical household income, if you don't have to go through the loads of paperwork I do that shows how some other household of 5 might be scraping through with bare $500 a month.

With one member of the family sickly.

With another way too old to be considered for work.

With other members just tiny tots.

Glad to hear Minister want to raise the income limit for the FAS. It's difficult to try to figure out some families get by. And renching to make the cut of who gets the assistance and who doesn't by the current income limit.

PS: *God, please don't make me so kiasu, kiasi, colok and what-nots when I become a parent!*
