Singapore's employment rate hits new high

SINGAPORE'S employment grew by a strong 66,200 in 2004, more than recovering the job losses of 35,900 over the last three years, the Manpower Ministry said in a press statement on Monday.

The Ministry's preliminary estimates shows that the total number of persons employed rose to a new high of 2,201,300 as at December 2004.

Reflecting the strong employment creation, the year ended with a seasonally adjusted overall unemployment rate of 3.7 per cent in December 2004, significantly lower than 4.6 per cent a year ago.

The growth was achieved on the back of robust quarterly gains which peaked at 27,500 in the fourth quarter 2004.
